International Institute of Education (IIE)

Summer 2009 Site Review

Student: Government/French Junior
Position: Enrichment and Professional Development Intern

Every year the US Department of State, Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs, generously provides funding for Fulbright grantees and Hubert H. Humphrey fellows that need preacademic training prior to their academic activities in the fall. In response to this need, IIE designs and works with various Intensive English programs located in various universities throughout the country. These programs offer a unique combination of English language refinement and an introduction to academic preparation, student life in the United States, and American culture and society.

The responsibilities of the intern include evaluating grantees’ English language proficiency and determining the type of preacademic training needed. The intern must learn about J-1 visa regulations and the SEVIS module. The intern must learn the best practice for administering student exchange programs. Performing accurate data entry and processing to the SEVIS module, including and not limiting to biographical data entry, category and field of study codes, financial information and the site of activity information. Maintaining accurate and current lists of grantees and related reports and financial records. Creating cost estimates and budgets to ensure the proper expenditure of funds administered. Processing grantee and tuition and fees payments and understanding accounting processes. Interacting with grantees/fellows, Fulbright Officers, AMIDEAST, and LASPAU colleagues s well as IEP staff via email, telephone and letters. Time scheduled to accompany the Senior Program Officer in IEP site visits to determine compliance with guidelines and suitability as well as provide guidance to grantees.

In general terms, the internship is logistical and political. Working on a payment request for a grantee is more tedious that filing a tax return or the FAFSA. One needs the proper communication skills to deal with posts/commissions in foreign countries, international students, and adults from various universities.
