Law Offices of Jones & Westrom

Fall 2012 Site Review

Position: Legal Intern
Student: Economics Junior

Jones & Westrom has been a great environment to work in over the last few months.  The office, equipment, and people are great and there is really nothing I would change.  Since the assignment is to describe a typical day, the reader should be aware that I usually work in the afternoons.  I will do my best to describe one of my more active afternoons, usually from 2PM to 5PM.

When I arrive at the office I usually go by Mr. Westrom’s office and the office of the other partner of the firm, Ms. Jones.  I say hello and ask about the current status of projects we have been working on.  Also I use this time to discuss anything new that might be going on, work-related or personal.  I have found that it is helpful to build and grow your relationship with your bosses on a professional and personal level and asking about an individual’s family activities or briefly talking about sports is generally an excellent way to build a relationship.  After we have talked for ten to fifteen minutes, I head to my office.  Most interns probably would not have an office, but since this is a smaller law firm, there is an extra room for me to use.  I proceed to check my email to see if I have received anything from clients or other individuals in the firm.  I also use this time to check my Outlook calendar so I know what is due or about to be due in the coming days.

After I finish my beginning routine, I transition into project mode, working on projects that I have previously discussed with Mr. Westrom.  We have found that it is best to keep a running list of things that need to take priority so that we can quickly get things done while keeping our communication lines open.  As I work on the projects assigned to me, if I come across something that requires assistance, I speak with Mr. Westrom about the issue.  This could be anything from wording in a client letter to a graphics question about a presentation.  In the legal industry it is imperative that you convey the right message accurately the first time since there is little time for subsequent attempts.  I continue to work on these projects until 5PM or until I reach a stopping point.  Before leaving for the day, Mr. Westrom and I again discuss what has been done and what still needs to be accomplished.  We also take this time to amend or update the working to-do list.  Overall, it is a pretty intense three to four hours of work, since we are each trying to squeeze out as much production as possible in a short time frame.
