Summer 2012 Site Review

Position: Production Dept – Arts in Context Intern
Student: American Studies Junior

This summer I have worked as an intern for the production department of KLRU-TV, Austin PBS.  As a production intern, I have helped with various aspects of producing segments for television broadcast, from transcribing interviews to building sets to shooting footage.  Most of the time, I have worked at the office in my small cubicle, typing away at the computer.  However, about once a week there will be a “remote shoot” or an Austin City Limits taping or else something entirely different.

Thus, a “day in the life” is somewhat misleading, due to the peripatetic nature of the job.  Most days, I’ll come into the office after class and after lunch, at around 2pm.  I’ll check the dry-erase board, which displays the “intern to-do” list.  Often there will be a transcription assignment—either for the shows “Texas Central Gardener” or “Arts in Context”.  Transcribing interviews involves playing the tape or audio file and typing as accurately as possible the recorded dialogue.  Since both of these shows are ongoing with new interviews being recorded all the time, transcriptions represent a constant portion of the workload.  Other tasks around the office include making copies, straightening and organizing the office space, hanging timetabled schedules at their designated locations throughout the building, and burning DVD’s for the station’s catalogue.

On days of “remote shoots”, it is always a different experience.  Often, the remotes will be Austin City Limits tapings, for which I simply do odd jobs, from running camera cables to setting up or breaking down the stage.  However, during other “remotes”, I have been involved with the both the interview process and filming.
