Malaysian Institute of Economic Research [Malaysia]

Summer 2012 Site Review

Position: Research & Analysis Intern
Student: Economics Sophomore

It is a typical weekday morning in Kuala Lumpur, the heart of Malaysia. I begin my day by reviewing the tasks that I did yesterday. Dr. Fauzi, my supervisor, insists that I write down the tasks that I have done in a planner to keep track the progress of my work. Then, I list the work that I need to do today and prioritize them according to their deadlines. Around nine to ten in the morning, I usually go to Dr. Fauzi’s office and report the progress of my work. I will also use this time to consult him if I have any problems with my work.

The main responsibilities of a student intern in the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER) are achieving the internship goals and assisting research fellows in their works. The internship goals are the aims that are set and agreed by both intern and his or her supervisor on the first day of internship and it must be achieved within the internship period. Achieving the objectives may require the intern to do extensive readings as well as to have a few consultations sessions with his or her supervisors. The supervisor will give reading lists or books for the interns to read and specify the statistical program that he or she wants intern to use. Also, interns often have to help other research fellows with their works as well. This usually involves collecting data from various sources, reading and summarizing articles for literature review and conducting analysis on the data given by the research fellows. These tasks can be quite tedious as they often have short deadlines and sometimes intern may not have background information on the data that he or she is collecting.

Although conducting research can be intense at times, it helps interns to gain his or her understanding of new concepts and information necessary for research in a short time as well as develops the intern’s skill in time management.
