National Hispanic Institute

Spring 2013 Site Review

Position: Administration Intern
Student: International Relations Senior

As an intern with the National Hispanic Institute the work we did was rewarding, engaging, progressive and useful. I was able to learn a variety of skill sets and see the work done through the internship in action as the session went underway. This internship provided a lot of work in a variety of areas in which I was able to take initiative and responsibility for a number of assignments.

The unique part of this internship is the diverse type of staff in which you interact with. The students the organization works with are high school students thus a large focus is ensuring the students are engaged and enjoying their experience. Next we work with the high school staff who are volunteers that are trainers and committee chairs for the organization. In addition to the students the parents have a large role in the organization thus coordinating parent involvement a task that was interesting given that I was a college student.

Depending on the week, the day would begin either at the Texas State Capital, if the students were in training season, or at headquarters in which we would conduct administrative operations for the organization, plan events, engage with cliental, and work on assignments. On an average day I made at least ten phone calls, either to students, parents, community reps, or my supervisor in order to clarify instruction. The first part of the day would be spent ensuring the students had everything they needed, documents, proper training, resources for recruitment, or tickets for fundraising events.

During the latter part of the day I was given the chance to work on whichever project I needed to complete for that week or session. This often entailed looking for information online or on the server of the organization. There was definitely a good balance of instruction and flexibility or freedom with the assignments. Each week would finish with me turning in completed projects or updates on current tasks to the Project Administrator of the region.
