NBC Olympics (Beijing, China)

Summer 2008 Site Review

Student: Asian Cultures and Languages Senior
Position: NBC Olympic Internship/Venue Operations Runner

To summarize the work roles and responsibilities of the NBC Olympic Internship program at first seems like a task almost as formidable and demanding as the job itself. There is no formal job description, no hours that aren’t subject to frequent and drastic changes, and no task that is either too big or too small for an intern. So far, I have done everything from translating between a technician and a Chinese fuel-truck delivery crew at 2 in the morning and helping a camera crew do a shoot at the great wall, to 12 hours of nonstop office supply organizing and merchandising. I have worked 10am-10pm, 7am-7pm and 7pm-7am shifts, each for several days, altogether 80-hour weeks, and all for no pay. Thus, there quite simply is no “typical day,” but in my opinion that’s one of the best aspects of the job. At this internship it would be impossible to complain of monotony.
