Fall 2014 Site Review

Position: Intern
Student: Government Junior

Pearl Events is an event planning located in Austin. It is on 38th street, which is super close to campus (a 5 min drive). Pearl Events specializes in weddings; they rarely do any other types of events. I had the pleasure of working for them this semester. The internship entails office work and on-site event work. Our administrator, Jaclyn, monitors office work and on-site event work will be with one of the planners. A day of office work is as follows: once you arrive to the office, Jaclyn will give you a list of tasks that the planners need for you to do. Some of the tasks include cleaning the office, sending a welcome packet to a new client, making a binder for an upcoming wedding, or social media work.

Pearl Events has an awesome blog. On the Pearl Events email (that is accessible by any Pearl Events staff), the interns receive the content that needs to be posted on the blog and then the intern will then check for grammar/spelling and make sure everything is formatted correctly so the blog is uniform. Pearl Events’ blog is very vital to the company so it requires you to be very precise and pay attention to detail. Once you’ve posted the blog, you then have to post the link of the blog post on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Pearl Events also has the interns do work on Pinterest. You “pin” latest wedding trends and other ideas to help the bride decide what she wants for the wedding.

For the on-site part of the internship, you have to make sure you are alert and receptive at all times both to the head planner and to the guests. On-site work can last from 8-12 hours, which makes it a very tiring day. Some tasks for on-site work include relaying messages from the bridal party to the event planner, setting up the venue, and breaking everything down at the end of the night. Breaking down means taking all the decorations down and packing them up in the appropriate place. When you first get to the venue, you have to set up everything and make sure you have a checklist so you don’t forget to pack something up at the end of the night. You also have to make sure you are coordinated with the event planner, the manager of the venue, other vendors, and the bridal party. During the wedding, you may have to speak to the guests when they ask for directions or when they need to be seated, etc.

The event planner sometimes will have you get drinks or food for the bride and groom because they are the most important people to please during the event. At the end of the night, you must make sure everything is packed up and in the right area. Some items will go to the bridal party and some items are owned by Pearl Events. Losing something of anyone in the bridal party would be bad. It is the intern’s job to make the event planner’s job easier.
