Spring 2012 Site Review

Position: Social Media Intern
Student: Rhetoric & Writing Junior

Shoutz is a new social media app that allows users to share fifteen second videos with their friends, followers, family, and their favorite celebrities. Shoutz is the first social media app of its kind because it allows user to connect using their smart phone. Shoutz has started to take off as a forerunner in the race of video social networking.

The Shoutz office is open from 9am to 5pm. As an intern, I went three days a week and stayed until my supervisors left, which varied depending on upcoming projects. They are very good at working around student schedules, and at accommodating to a student’s needs. As the first and only intern, I believe they did an excellent job of organizing tasks and finding a way to make it easy for me as a student to find time to work and to get things done for school.

The days I did not go into the office I still had to do work. They required me to still update the other social media sites form either home or school. This is not a difficult task, but it needs to be done daily since social media, as well as the internet, change daily.

At the office, I generally had to update the social media first thing in the morning. Throughout the day, new shouts would come in. If a shout came in from a client or celebrity, it had to immediately be featured, and then be posted on all of our sites and pages. After that, my job consisted of checking Google to make sure our search-ability was still positive, checking our reviews on websites and trying to make them more positive, and see if anyone had written an article on us. After that, I had to make a daily Shout that would be featured on the site. Most days consisted of planning for future projects, upcoming marketing events, looking over Shouts, and waiting until something came up. On many occasions I did write and edit the copy for the website.

Shoutz was a great location for an internship. If they continue to have an internship program, I would recommend it for Liberal Arts students.
