Susan Komen Austin

Fall 2015 Site Review

Position: Fundraising and Events Intern
Student: IRG Senior

Susan G. Komen Austin is the local affiliate of the national breast cancer foundation. Susan G. Komen. Komen’s mission is to saves lives locally and fight breast cancer globally, and we accomplish this by fighting breast cancer in central Texas and contributing to national research.

As a fundraising and events intern, my primary responsibility is to assist in raising money to contribute to our grant program, which provides grants to local health providers to offer free breast health services to women in the Austin area facing breast cancer. Komen’s largest events of the year are Race for the Cure, a 5k through downtown Austin, and Pink!, a gala benefitting Komen Austin. There are also dozens of smaller events throughout the year that raise money and awareness for Komen.

My daily responsibilities include assisting my supervisor with any development tasks and coordination my own portfolio of projects I have been working on. Though tasks vary largely from week to week, examples of projects I have worked on include soliciting restaurants to participate in our Dine Out for the Cure event, writing thank you notes for donors, working with donor and sponsors on event deliverables, creating promotional materials, and following up with contacts. Interns work twenty hours a week and report to their direct supervisor.

Another key responsibility is attending and helping out at Komen events. Events often need volunteers for check‐in, setup, and break‐down. During our largest event Race for the Cure, I assisted at race set up, survivor celebration, and early in the morning for race day. It is an extremely rewarding experience to get to interact with breast cancer survivors, fighters, and supporters at Komen’s many community events. Interning at Komen Austin is a valuable experience if you are seeking to work in nonprofit development and fundraising.
