Swiss Reinsurance Company

Summer 2017

Position: Actuary Intern
Student: Economics Senior

Swiss Re is a multinational corporation that has many offices in the United States. Swiss Re consists of three main branches; Life and Health, Property and Casualty, and Corporate Solutions. Life and Health and Property and Casualty branches consist of both direct insurance and re-insurance. Corporate Solutions is focused on providing services to other companies, and these services involve insurance and bond related services.

I currently work on the life and health side and I am responsible for the valuation for the Disability Income blocks of business. As an intern, I am required to perform experience studies, using existing data, to calculate best estimate factors that are applied to the reserves. These factors are used to fine tune the reserves so that the company doesn’t overstate or understate the reserves.

My typical day involves first checking my calendar to see what is due for each day. In the work setting, I have to rely on my calendar because managers are able to add meetings to my calendar; therefore it is important that I check what is on the agenda for the day. Furthermore, I try to get in early to understand what my project is about and I also try to replicate the results from last year. I do this to understand the calculations in the excel sheets and the queries in the access database so I can ask pertinent questions.

Overall, my days are quite busy and it is important that I make the best use of my time. I have learnt the importance of getting work before the deadlines so that I can clarify doubts with my managers.
