Texas Cultural Trust

Spring 2011 Site Review

Position: Nonprofit Cultural Arts Fundraising Intern
Student: Economics Junior

The Texas Cultural Trust is a non-profit organization which seeks to raise awareness about the importance of art programs throughout the state. They have many programs in which they do this. This internship is great for anyone with a passion for the arts, regardless of major. As an intern for the Texas Cultural Trust, there are many different aspects of non-profit business management that are incorporated in daily activities.

Every other year, the Texas Cultural Trust holds a fundraising event called the Texas Medal of Arts Awards. This is a time for the organization and its board members to invite the community to appreciate the arts. The honorees for this award vary from philanthropic contributors to the arts throughout the state, to artists who have claimed Texas as their own. This year, honorees included Bill Paxton, ZZ Top, Ray Benson, and many more. It is a great opportunity to “learn-the-ropes” in planning a high-profile event.

The duties involved in this preparation include contacting constituents, board members, legislative offices and business owners via phone, electronic mail and face-to-face contact in effort to obtain sponsorship and support for the Texas Medal of Arts event. As an intern, you are responsible for developing and editing informative packets and programs to send out to these potential supporters. This persistent contact with contributors emphasizes the importance of fundraising within a non-profit organization. This contact, however, does not end when the Texas Medal of Arts Awards Show is over. There are several programs and events within the Texas Cultural Trust, this is just the largest.
