Texas Military Forces Museum

Fall 2011

Student: History Senior
Position: Museum Intern

The Texas Military Forces Museum is located on the Camp Mabry Military base across Mopac on 35th street. It is a non-profit museum, and therefore it is free to the public. It is completely funded by the Texas Military Forces Foundation, a non-profit organization that raises funds through donations, because the state government completely cut their yearly budget. Due to this, my internship was unpaid, but they were talking about offering future interns a small stipend in the future.

The museum’s hours are Wednesday-Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. I went every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but they are very flexible when setting up hours, and by no means do they require their interns to do as many hours as I did. When I arrived in the morning I usually had the choice between cataloguing new artifacts into the museum’s Past Perfect database, or joining one of my supervisor’s in the mount building shop to help him with just about any step in the mount building process, including cutting wood down to size, painting, welding metal bars into shape, and gluing plexiglass pieces together to make cases. Nearly every other day I was assigned to a special project for the museum’s registrar, such as updating the entire flag collection into new storage units, or going through archive cabinets to write down what was in them. In a museum internship, you really do learn how to do just about everything associated with the field.

I also got to help with a couple special events. I jumped into the internship just as they were about ready to open a new exhibit, so I was able to assist with that. Also, I ran the sound for their WWII close assault reenactment that takes place twice a year, and that was probably my favorite day because it was so cool to see history come to life!
