Fall 2009 Site Review

Position: Public Relations Intern
Student: American Studies Junior

UgaBeads is a line of socially and ecologically responsible jewelry that benefits orphaned and vulnerable children in Uganda. What sets it apart from other goodwill companies is its close connection to its cause. Because UgaBeads works in partnership with non-profit organization Empower African Children, interns and employees have the chance to meet and interact with the same children they are working to support. Its multifaceted business structure makes it appealing to those interested in fashion, public relations, non-profit and business management.

Because the company is small and relatively new, interns have the opportunity to manage projects on their own and contribute their ideas to their superiors. For example, I’m interested in event planning and thought that throwing a launch party would help get the word out for UgaBeads. My bosses let me construct my own plan and with their approval, I was put in charge of planning and managing the event. Opportunities like these have helped me gain knowledge that I will undoubtedly apply to my career in the near future.

The UgaBeads team takes a vested interest in its interns. The small environment allows for open communication and understanding of academic obligations. However, the team also depends on its interns to make a difference for the organization. In my opinion, the heightened responsibility is a rare opportunity for college students. I would recommend this internship to anyone interested in the cause or those who want to gain real-life career experience.
