UT Austin Longhorn Center for Academic Excellence

Fall 2015 Site Review

Position: Intern
Student: Government Senior

In Higher Education system in America there is a need for FirstYear students, both community and university, to receive support during their transitional time from high school to college. As an intern I using my current experiences, resources and knowledge as a former community college student and UT student in the Longhorn Center for Academic Excellence to create a comparative analysis and an engagement plan with a sense of uniqueness, purpose and engagement for FirstYear college students. I worked collaboratively with Dr. Aileen Bumphus and Dr. Christie Ponce to research, collaborate and develop strategies for engaging First Year students in the college setting for the purpose of increasing retention rates, social awareness and degree completion.

Within my internship for the Fall 2015 semester I was tasked with the responsibility to create a student success comparative analysis and engagement plan for my hometown’s local community college Lee College in Baytown, Texas. To complete these tasks I researched The University of Texas at Austin, Austin Community College, Huston Tillotson and Lee College current student success programs employed through each university or college. Within my research I found retention rates can be increased with student success programs.
