The University of Texas at Austin Facility Services

Spring 2012 Site Review

Position: Communications Intern, Facilities Services and Project Management & Construction Services Departments
Student: Rhetoric & Writing Senior

My internship is as the Communications Intern for Facilities Services and Project Management & Construction Services departments at The University of Texas at Austin.  I work directly under Laurie Lentz, Communications Coordinator for FS-PMCS and am assigned various tasks throughout the weeks, though many of the projects are similar.

Generally speaking, I have two to three concurrent tasks to work on at any given time. These can include press releases for the university, short employee biographies to be featured in the department’s monthly employee newsletter, and various articles about activities or initiatives within the departments. I am sometimes asked to answer phones for the office, but this happens very rarely.

In the past I have been asked to visit presentations to take notes and, subsequently, write an article about the events. For instance, last spring a solar power array was unveiled at Pickle Research Campus; I attended the event, took notes, and wrote up an article that was then featured on the university’s website on the KNOW section.  More recently, I went to Summitt Elementary to attend a presentation that the director of PMCS gave to a kindergarten class discussing construction and carpentry as part of a UT student’s class project. The piece I put together for that event was more geared toward FS-PMCS employees rather than the whole university community.

When drafting the employee bios, I contact the featured employee to set up a meeting time, interview them about his/her life, education, employment, hobbies, etc. and draft a 350-450 word bio about them that is linked to the FS website and Facebook page. From start to finish, these usually take one or two days to complete.
