UT IC2 Institute

Fall 2011

Student: International Relations & Global Studies Junior
Position: Research Assistant

A Day in the Life of an Undergraduate Research Assistant

The IC2 Institute is an interdisciplinary research unit of The University of Texas at  Austin; it has advanced the Theory and Practice of Entrepreneurial Wealth Creation. The theories and hypotheses developed at IC2 are tested in life‐scale through several world‐recognized programs: the Austin Technology Incubator, one of the world's most prominent business incubators, the Bureau of Business Research, to provide Texas  leaders with research data to strengthen the state’s economy, and the Global  Commercialization Group, to catalyze emerging knowledge‐based economies throughout  the world. I was fortunate enough to find the job as research assistant for the director of  the Economic Development Program in The Bureau of Business Research.

The Bureau of Business Research is in charge of providing Texas business people and policymakers with applied economic research and data to strengthen the state’s business environment. My typical day at the BBR starts in a meeting with my boss. During these meetings I learn of the projects that she is working on. These range from short term to long term projects as well as local to international projects. Once I’ve been updated with everything that she is doing, she assigns me parts that she wants me to help her research. This includes using research databases to find articles pertaining to the project we have to complete. After reading the articles I choose the best ones to use for research. When I’m done for the day I meet with my boss again to review my findings.

The IC2 has several programs that work to test the ideas developed at the institute. As a research assistant I not only learn from my boss, but also from the topics I read in the articles. It has helped me enhance my knowledge of many subjects in business.
