UT College of Liberal Arts Public Affairs

Spring 2011 Site Review

Position: Public Affairs Intern
Student: Plan II/Rhetoric Sophomore

The public affairs office internship is for those students who have interests in either journalism or public relations (or both!) but are not quite ready to leave the liberal arts title behind.  At its core, the internship focuses on promoting and writing about the College of Liberal Arts. You learn of its various programs and its most recent and exciting news. You then take this news, interviewing students, faculty, and professors, and spin it into a story. Finally, this story is either published online on the college’s website or in Life & Letters, the college’s magazine.

A typical day at my internship includes settling down in front of a desk on the fifth floor of Gebauer. From here, I update the “Know” section of the College of Liberal Arts website and wait for an assignment. I am called in and briefed on a story that is in the works. Assignment in hand, I start preliminary research and schedule interviews throughout the week. If I have an interview that day, I think about possible questions and points of interest. Once both the research and interview portions of the story are complete, I re-listen to the interviews (which I audio record on my laptop) and try to pick out key quotes. From these quotes, I mold a story, which I turn in for edits.
