UT Landscape Services

Spring 2014

Position: Landscape Services Student Associate
Student: Urban Studies Senior

The University of Texas at Austin Landscape Services is a department of Facility Services and is responsible for the campus landscape. Their mission is to create and manage a physical environment that promotes learning, research, and public service at the University of Texas at Austin through our core values of service, integrity, teamwork, excellence, and stewardship.

As an intern, you are given the opportunity to explore a variety of professions within Landscape Services: sustainability, arboriculture, irrigation, water conservation, landscape design, landscape installation, project management, horticulture, and more. Therefore your ‘typical day’ will vary greatly, and you may find yourself climbing and pruning trees one day and drafting landscape designs the other. The department also handles emergency calls on anything related to natural hazards, adding a challenge to keeping a organized schedule.

As you narrow down your interests, your schedule becomes structured and detailed as well. For example, I took a particular interest in arboriculture. The focus was to study and manage campus trees. On a regular day, we would examine a few problematic sites, attend a landscape planting meeting for a construction project, prune a few trees, and inspect areas of campus for possible problems. In Landscape Services, students have the ability to tailor their internship towards their own professional goals, and by doing so, gain a more primitive experience.
