Water to Thrive

Fall 2014 Site Review

Position: Marketing Intern
Student: Economics and IRG Senior

My semester as a Marketing Intern at Water To Thrive has been an enjoyable one due to several factors.  For starters if an automobile is the mode of transportation, a student living anywhere near campus only needs to take Mopac up north for 10 minutes if it is not rush hour in order to arrive at the work place. During rush hour, however, one can take up to 35 minutes getting from work to campus or vice versa. As far as parking goes, it is never an issue since the office building has a vast parking lot with large amounts of open spaces every day close to the office building doors perhaps unlike some office buildings located downtown.

The office is located in the first floor of the office building and it is very handicap accessible. When entering the office one would see the front office secretary, and then Carrie and Joyce who both have desks before reaching the intern office. I share my office with the other intern, Ginny, who also attends UT Austin. Because the intern office has a wide two-person desk and a side table, space is never an issue. My day-today work entails video editing for promotional purposes especially since my boss took notice of my film-making and editing talents very early on in the semester.

Although my job description originally said it would primarily entail the social media management and the expansion of outreach programs, Lizzie Kovach thought my talents would best be utilized through the making of new videos since the ones they had were outdated. Perhaps that is the most important thing to keep in mind about Water to Thrive: because it is a smaller organization all employees are expected to be flexible and adaptable to new tasks that may or may not have been addressed in the job description.

Hours are very lenient and because every employee has an office key, all are welcome to work overtime if they had to come in later than scheduled. No time sheets are required, but if you are the last person out of the office it is always important to remember to lock the front door. I am fortunate to have worked at Water to Thrive.
