Position: Global Public Relations Intern
Student: Rhetoric & Writing, Senior

As a Global PR Intern at Whole Foods Market, no day is really the same. Depending on the week there might be an event, huge promotion going on, pitching, etc. When starting out as a new intern, the team usually starts you off by having you work on media monitoring. Media monitoring is when you have to keep track in an excel document of the coverage (print, online, broadcast) that a promotion or news story receives. This is a good way of understanding what all the team does and getting an idea of what all is going on. Each day you’ll have to use Cision and Quantcast to determine the impressions each outlet receives. Resizing photos is another task that is frequently done by interns. Usually we receive requests from our external PR agency for recipe images. This takes having a decent understanding of Photoshop.

After getting a good grasp on the above processes the team will then start to task you with projects like writing media advisories for one-day sales and drafting press releases for the Newsroom. These are both wonderful hands-on experiences that help to build your portfolio. Press releases give a more detailed explanation of the specific announcement. It’s only a matter of time until you begin pitching different promotions like Mother’s Day DIY to bloggers or a garden-planting event to media. Either way it’s a great way to learn the ins and outs of how to work with media, and what your pitching style is. In any of these situations the key thing to remember is to work hard, show interest, and have fun, because the team will see and recognize that and it will only lead to even better things and an amazing internship experience.
