Workforce Solutions

Spring 2012 Site Review

Position: Development Intern
Student: Government Junior

My current internship for the spring semester 2012 was spent working as a Customer Service Representative for Work Source Solutions which is part of the Texas Work Force Commission whose main goal is to help unemployed individuals in the State of Texas to find available work and training programs related to one’s individual work goals.

My main responsibilities during the course of my internship were to provide direct assistance to individuals in our work resource room on how to search for jobs available in one’s chosen field. I also provided individual and group lessons on how to write resumes and provided assistance on what types of job training and academic and vocational training programs are available for individuals seeking to reenter the workforce. I also attended and participated in several staff meetings which mainly dealt with two major programs: Choices and Snap. These are support programs in which clients who are receiving food stamps are given one on one special assistance from client support specialist in finding work and training programs in their particular line of work. Additional services provided to these clients are bus passes, gas cards, and rental assistance if the client being served is in need of such services.

I also spent some time researching various bills which were passed during the past Legislative Session dealing with work and training program issues which directly effect, every individual who is unemployed seeking to reenter the work force. I also learned that unemployment benefits paid out to unemployed individuals are eligible for such benefits are based on the last work quarter history in which one has earned wages. Texas is one of two states that uses this formula. Forty-eight other states base their unemployment wages earned based on wages earned during the last 52 weeks which equal to one full year.
