YMCA Austin

Spring 2015 

Position: Human Resources Intern
Student: Economics Senior

In the spring of 2015 I had an internship with the YMCA of Austin as an HR Intern. I would consider this internship to be a good fit for any student at UT. It is an administrative type internship with lots of spreadsheets, forms, emails, and phone calls on any given day.  By the end of the internship you will have a pretty good idea of what an HR department does.

The office is a very convenient distance from campus. I was expected to dress business casual Monday through Wednesday. Thursday and Friday I was allowed to wear jeans. Everyone around me was always very patient and helpful which made me appreciate everything the Y does. My supervisors were friendly and happy to talk to me about my career goals and planning.

What you will be doing depends on the season. When I interned in the spring the YMCA was trying to hire part-time summer employees. I think the main reason I was hired was to help out with recruiting, however I was also tasked to transfer documents into an electronic record keeping system. The latter wasn’t so exciting but it is something I am sure many offices have to do. The former involved me contacting several surrounding high schools and universities in the Austin area.

Aside from these two assignments I also revised the format of the new employee handbook, and did research on other companies onboarding practices to improve our own. Additionally I was shown how to post job openings and assisted in data entry. During big lulls in the office I asked around in the department to see if anyone else needed help with anything. I found this was a great way to make it clear that I wanted to learn about HR and that I was dedicated to the internship.
