Free Online Course Materials on Foreign Language Teaching Methods

The University of Texas Language Technology Center has released a free online methods course for beginning foreign language teachers at the high-school and college levels: Foreign Language Teaching Methods. The flexible resource can be used as a component of a classroom methods course, a self-paced learning resource for independent learners, or as a way for teachers to earn professional development credits.

The course was developed by a team of twelve faculty members from departments within the College of Liberal Arts (French and Italian, Germanic Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, Slavic and Eurasian Studies, Spanish and Portuguese), and the College of Education (Curriculum and Instruction). The project was sponsored by a Professional Development Modules grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Based on an actual methods course, the online course contains interactive, media-rich modules that give the online learner the virtual experience of participating in the methods sources alongside a diverse group of beginning teachers. New foreign language teachers can benefit from the presentation of best practices and innovative methods in three major areas of language teaching:

  • Language: Vocabulary, Grammar, Pragmatics, Culture
  • Classroom: The Language Learner, Classroom Management, Technology, Assessment

Features of the course include:

  • Over 13 hours of video footage from an actual methods course and 275 pages of instructional content developed by experts in the field of foreign language education.
  • Videos of actual foreign language learners and classrooms.
  • Self-correcting exercises.
  • Portfolios of sample materials.
  • Interviews with beginning teachers.

This highly collaborative project represents one of the best practices of the CORELL, (formerly the Texas Language Technology Center) whose mission is to improve foreign language instruction by exploring the potential of emerging technologies. For more information, please contact CORELL.
