Prof. Nora England Honored by Symposium and by Award from Guatemalan Government
Program for the symposium honoring Prof. England

Throughout her career, Prof. Nora C. England has been deeply committed to working with speakers of modern Mayan languages, especially those of Guatemala.

On June 1, 2019, a special symposium in honor of Prof. England was held in Antigua, Guatemala. A series of invited talks reported on current research on the linguistics of Mayan languages and on Prof. England’s many contributions to the documentation and description of Mayan languages and to the linguistic training of many speakers of Mayan languages. The symposium was supported by the Department of Linguistics, as well as Native American and Indigenous Studies, LLILAS-Benson, the College of Liberal Arts, and Mexico’s CIMSUR.

The day before the symposium, Prof. England was honored by the Guatemalan Ministry of Culture and Sport in the Cambio de la Rosa “Changing of the Rose”, a ceremony in remembrance of the peace accords of 1996. During that ceremony, Prof. England was bestowed the title of Ambassador of Peace by the Government of Guatemala, in recognition of her contributions in support of Mayan languages and peoples.
