Neglected suburbs of Buenos Aires are worlds of material and affect deprivation, universes where violence presents itself with brutal frequency; suffocating daily life of the most dispossessed that it is hard to imagine how anyone could “leave intact” from there. This is the reality that authors Javier Auyero and Maria Fernanda Berti inhabit to pursue unique and compelling research.

Based on the stories and testimonies of students from a school located in the southern suburbs, and relying on numerous records obtained in the neighborhoods from three years of fieldwork, they examine the forms and uses of violence in everyday life of the urban poor. From the produced materials offered by the children and youth and ethnographic observation, the authors develop a radically new approach for their analysis which demonstrates how the various forms of violence, usually studied separately (gender, sex, police or criminal violence), are interwoven such that each one is the cause of the others. The surprising combination of fieldwork and reflection, observation and analysis, lived and expressed experience, makes this book one where distance is impossible, such that you can’t avoid getting involved or walking away from it so easily. This work forces one to reread it, evoke it, and to comment on it. "We've been there,” write their authors, “at the school, in the neighborhood, in the community room, and now here we are trying to rebuild what we have seen, heard and witnessed."

Javier Auyero is the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Professor of Latin American Sociology. His most recent books include Flammable: Environmental Suffering in an Argentine Shantytown (2009), Patients of the State: The Politics of Waiting in Argentina (2012), and Cities from Scratch (2013).
