Por una vida libre de violencia para las mujeres
For a life free of violence for women

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, LLILAS Benson and the Center for Women’s & Gender Studies at UT Austin have joined forces to inaugurate the “Marcela Lagarde y de los Ríos Cátedra (Program) for the Study of Gender Violence.” This Cátedra, formed by a network of six universities and one research center located in Texas, Mexico, and Guatemala, will be devoted to study and action on roots and remedies of gender violence in the Americas, carrying on the work and legacy of the renowned Mexican anthropologist and feminist Dr. Marcela Lagarde y de los Ríos. The March 8 program will consist of a major lecture by Dr. Lagarde, and additional activities to create a space for reflection on problems of sexual and gender-based violence in the Americas, and dialogue toward effective political / policy responses. Similar activities will then take place once a semester in each of the other six locales, returning to Austin three years hence.
