Meets TH 9:30AM-12:30PM ART 3.432

This course will explore the conceptualization of space, place, the built environment, and nature/sacred locations in ancient Mesoamerica in both the ancient past and modern scholarship. Themes to be addressed include the various ways in which archaeological landscapes are constructed and experienced, as well as the making and visualization of memory and place through architecture, sculpture, natural and human-built pathways, and maps. Special consideration will be given to how we access and present information concerning ancient archaeological landscapes and the various ways in which it can be interpreted, with an eye to not only the field of Mesoamerican studies but to the broader domains of art history, archaeology, and anthropology more generally. This course will consider evidence from the Preclassic, Classic, and Post Classic periods and from the Olmec, Maya, and Aztec regions.
