"Nuestra Señora de Cocharcas" (Our Lady of Cocharcas, detail). 1751. Collection of Carl & Marilynn Thoma.

LLILAS Benson is proud to present the third online issue of Portal, available at llilasbensonmagazine.org. The online magazine includes all of the articles published in the hard-copy annual review, in addition to Spanish-language material and other content.

Highlights of this edition include writing by Puerto Rican author and public intellectual Eduardo Lalo in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria; a richly illustrated feature on paintings from the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Collection of Spanish Colonial Art, currently on loan to the Blanton Museum; an article climate change tourism in Peru by Molly Polk of the Department of Geography and the Environment; and reporting by photojournalist and LLILAS dual degree master's student Lynda Gonzalez on poverty along the border in South Texas.

Portal features writing by faculty, students, and alumni on a wide range of topics relating to Latin America and US Latinas/os. Each issue also contains faculty and staff spotlights contributed by editor Susanna Sharpe. In this issue, Sharpe interviews Professor Jason Borge about his recent book Tropical Riffs: Latin America and the Politics of Jazz (2018) and Professor Kelly McDonough on her book The Learned Ones: Nahua Intellectuals in Postconquest Mexico (2016), and she writes about the fascinating work of Digital Scholarship Coordinator Albert A. Palacios.
