Visiting Professors Bring Eclectic Course Offerings This Spring

Students at graduate and undergraduate levels will have the opportunity to study with visiting scholars from Latin America this spring as LLILAS welcomes UT-Brazil Fulbright Visiting Professor Henrique Cukierman and Tinker Visiting Professors Rolando Díaz-Loving and Gabriela Siracusano.

Henrique Cukierman (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) will offer the graduate seminar Science and Technology Studies: A Brazilian and Latin American Approach. This course challenges the notion that science and technology studies (STS) consists of universal knowledge, and proposes restoring multiplicities in Latin American STS using what Brazilian anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro calls “degeneralization.” Course readings will include Brazilian authors Fernando de Azevedo, Simon Schwartzmann, and Silvia Figuerôa; Latin American authors whose works are gathered in the journal Quipu (1986); and selected readings of Brazilian authors affiliated with STS, such as Cukierman and Ivan da Costa Marques. Rolando Díaz-Loving is full professor in the Department of Psychology at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), and a member of Mexico’s National Council of Science. His research focuses on psychological processes in couples and families, sexual behavior, health, and HIV, as well as cross-cultural psychology and ethnopsychology. His spring 2019 graduate seminar, Mexican Ethnopsychology, will involve close reading and analysis of ethnopsychological studies on self-construals, gender identity, personality, couple and family relationships, subjective well-being mental health, and violence, among others, examining how these shape the ethnographic experience of Mexicans. Gabriela Siracusano, whose visit is co-sponsored by the Blanton Museum of Art, will offer the course Art in Colonial South America, which is open to upper-division undergraduate students as well as graduate students. Through the analysis of paintings, sculptures, and diverse objects, Siracusano will introduce historical, theoretical, and methodological approaches to the study of the visual production of South American Colonial Spanish domains (16th to 18th centuries). Paintings from the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Collection will be used to examine some of these topics. Siracusano is director of the Research Center for Art, Materiality, and Culture at the Instituto sobre Arte y Cultura “Dr. Norberto Griffa,” at Universidad Nacional Tres de Febrero in Buenos Aires. She is also a scientific career researcher at the National Scientific and Research Council of Argentina, CONICET. (Course info: LAS 327; Unique 39588; cross-listed with Art History.)
