Workshop to Feature UT-CIESAS Research Collaboration

Fri, April 2, 2010

LLILAS has signed a new exchange agreement with the Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social  in Mexico, creating exciting opportunities for student and faculty exchange and innovative collaborative research with one of Latin America’s foremost centers for the study of the social sciences.

Mexican Center of LLILAS

On April 7-8, 2010, CIESAS faculty from Mexico City, Oaxaca, and San Cristóbal will join LLILAS counterparts here in Austin at a workshop to present recent research projects in linguistics, history, ethnomusicology, and anthropology. They will discuss the latest advances in Mayan linguistics, rural Mexico and the post-Revolutionary era, community music organizations in Oaxaca, and the culture of violence in Mexican border cities. The visit will conclude with a meeting to explore ways to expand the exchange.

The exchange agreement was initiated by LLILAS Director Charles R. Hale, an anthropologist with longstanding ties to CIESAS. While teaching as visiting professor at the center’s Oaxaca campus in 2009, he began to consider the rich possibilities for collaboration in the fields of anthropology, sociology, and ethnomusicology, all particularly strong programs at both institutions, as well as in other areas such as linguistics and history. The UT workshop follows on the heels of  one last May in Oaxaca that brought together LLILAS and CIESAS faculty to discuss their research, as well as an October 2009 visit to UT by a delegation of CIESAS Ph.D. students from Mexico City.

For more information on the workshop, visit the LLILAS events calendar or the LLILAS Facebook page, or contact the Mexican Center of LLILAS.
