Jorge Derpic Awarded First Beca Anfibia
Jorge Derpic, Graduate Student, Department of Sociology

Jorge Derpic, a graduate student in the Department of Sociology, has been awarded the first Beca Anfibia, a summer stipend that supports a UT graduate student in the writing of a crónica, or short essay, for a broad audience. The idea for the pilot scholarship grew out of a workshop taught by Chilean journalist and writer Cristian Alarcón, Visiting Resource Professor at LLILAS during spring 2013.

During his visit, Professor Alarcón participated in the forum Dialogue between Academics and Journalists and taught a workshop to train UT graduate students to write crónicas periodísticas, or nonfiction stories. Given the amazing response, and recognizing the need to strengthen the links between academics and journalists, LLILAS created the beca. With the support of UT faculty and the editorial team of Revista Anfibia, the student will learn to write a short essay with a broader audience in mind. The work will be published in Anfibia, the online journal created by Cristian Alarcón in 2011 and sponsored by the Universidad Nacional San Martín (UNSAM). Although this scholarship is a pilot program at this time, if funding can be secured in the future, it could become permanent.

Nine graduate students from the Departments of Anthropology, Journalism, Radio-Television-Film, Sociology, and Spanish and Portuguese applied for the Beca Anfibia. Winner Jorge Derpic will spend this summer in Bolivia researching and writing. Congratulations, Jorge!
