UT Alum Wins Austin Film Festival Award

Thu, October 23, 2008

Gabriela Yepes, a 2008 MFA of UT’s Radio-Television-Film Department, received the Austin Film Festival’s Best Student Short Film Award for her writing and direction of Danzak, the story of Nina, a 10-year old girl whose life dramatically changes when she is asked to fulfill her dying father’s last wish.

The film, produced as Gabriela’s thesis, was inspired by “The Agony of Rasu Ñiti,” a short story by Peruvian writer José María Arguedas. This is the second award for Danzak—it also received the 2008 Craiowa Romanian Television/"Niste Tarani" Award at the Slatioara Film Festival in Romania. Danzak was partially funded with two Summer 2007 Lozano Long Travel Grants—one to Gabriela, and the second to Cuban American cinematographer Naiti Gamez, also an RTF alum.

Gabriela, who minored in Latin American Studies, recently received another grant to start research and development on a documentary film about the impact of global warming on indigenous communities in the southern Peruvian Andes.

Danzak will be playing one more time in Austin along with the other AFF film winners at the Alamo Drafthouse Lake Creek on Thursday, October 23, at 7:00 p.m. For more information, visit Austin Film Festival.
