UT to Host Binational Education Meeting with Mexico

Mon, May 12, 2008

In summer 2008, The University of Texas hosts a major binational meeting on education in the U.S. and Mexico, bringing together university presidents, elected officials, and other leaders in education from both countries for a historic dialogue on collaboration and exchange.

UT has partnered with ANUIES, the Asociación Nacional de Universidades e Instituciones de Educación Superior, for this important event. ANUIES is a nonprofit organization that brings together the colleges and universities of Mexico to promote improvements in teaching, research, and services to students. Founded in 1950, ANUIES comprises 145 public and private Mexican institutions of higher learning, including the most prestigious universities in the country. It represents 80 percent of all undergraduate and graduate students currently pursuing degrees in Mexico.

ANUIES saw The University of Texas as a natural partner for this event because of UT’s longstanding ties with Mexican universities and scholars. In recent years, UT has renewed its commitment to strengthening these vital relationships through exchange initiatives and major research projects. With organizations such as the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS) and the world-renowned Benson Latin American Collection that maintain close relationships with Mexico, the University was a natural fit for the first meeting of ANUIES in the United States.

The conference will highlight leading policymakers in education, including the Secretary of Education of Mexico, Josefina Vázquez Mota, who has had a distinguished career in Mexican educational and social policy. Joining her will be Assistant Secretary of Education Diane Jones and Representative Rubén Hinojosa of Texas, the current Chair of the U.S. Subcommittee on Higher Education. Mr. Hinojosa’s counterpart, Itzcóatl Tonatiuh Bravo Padilla, also will participate. Marco Muñoz, Assistant Director of LLILAS, played a key role in arranging the UT-ANUIES conference. He explains: “We look forward to hosting this important meeting. It gives us an opportunity to forge new relationships and explore new educational models that will have a lasting impact in both the United States and Mexico.” For more information on this event, please contact the Mexican Center at 512.232.2423 or e-mail Gail Sanders.
