Conference Evaluates Impact of NAFTA

Wed, February 7, 2007

NAFTA and U.S.-Mexico Relations: In Retrospect and Prospect, organized by the Mexican Center of LLILAS, will be held at The University of Texas February 22-23 and will provide a forum for evaluating the impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement on Mexico, the United States, and their bilateral relationship.

One of the major aims of the conference is to provide an assessment of the NAFTA negotiation processes. One panel will take a retrospective look at the process of negotiation, review the original goals that the agreement intended to accomplish, and discuss some of the challenges the treaty has faced in the past decade. Analyzing the negotiation process represents an important exercise to understand who benefited and who lost after the implementation of the treaty. Panelists will share their analyses of the negotiations between 1993 and 1994 that eventually led to the signing of the treaty, detailing the obstacles placed in their way by individuals and interest groups opposed to the treaty.

Panelists also will discuss the impact of NAFTA in regard to labor relations and immigration, technology and innovation, social and economic development, the rule of law, and the bilateral relationship in general. A panel on labor relations and immigration will assess the implications of NAFTA for the new dynamics of Mexico-U.S. migration, and the public policies emerging on both sides of the border to deal with them. A panel on technology innovation and business development will analyze the potential role of NAFTA in accelerating Mexico’s competitiveness and in promoting technological exchange and joint business development initiatives between the countries. A social and economic development panel will examine the influence of NAFTA on economic growth, poverty, and income inequalities, especially in Mexico.
