Program Description

The Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies is continuing its Learning from Mexico City study abroad program in the summer of 2018 (Session I May 31 to July 11) announces its call for one teaching assistant at The University of Texas at Austin. 

The teaching assistant will guide students in the study of Mexican tourism, informal/formal economies, art, performance, language, and patterns of migration through participant observation research and cultural studies methodologies. The program will include visits to cultural and archaeological sites in Mexico City like Templo Mayor, Palacio de Bellas Artes, the Museo Nacional de Antropología, and Teotihuacan, as well as an educational weekend excursion to Tepoztlán, Morelos. TA Job Description

The Learning from Mexico City Teaching Assistant supports the Program faculty director(s) with the coordination of classes, pre-departure workshops and assignments, independent research projects, and site visits and excursions. The TA is also expected to hold weekly office hours during the six weeks summer session for students who need guidance in their research projects or to answer questions regarding class material, including visits and navigating the city.

Successful candidates will possess 1-2 years work experience working with college student populations in teaching and mentoring. Familiarity with Mexico City and Spanish-language written and spoken fluency are required. Candidates must have a passion for teaching and mentoring a diverse student body. Prior teaching assistant and travel abroad experience is preferred.


Required Application Materials

  1. Completed Teaching Assistant Application form;
  2. A one-page statement about qualifications that make you an ideal candidate for working with the Learning from Mexico City program, including a statement on diversity and your training in Mexican American and Latina/o Studies;
  3. CV; and
  4. A letter of recommendation from your dissertation supervisor.

Appointment Details and Eligibility

20 hours per week; Summer Session I appointment in Mexico City, Mexico.

Applicants must be enrolled in graduate coursework in Summer I 2018. Position begins in Summer Session I, 2018.

Allocations, based on TA rates set by the College of Liberal Arts for AY 2015–16, are:

TA I: $2,236 (TA with BA)
TA II: $2,463 (TA with MA)

In addition, the Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies will provide a living stipend of $1500 for the TA to find housing in Mexico City for the duration of the program (May 31–July 11, 2018). All program related travel will be paid.
