"Shattering the Stereotypes: Muslim Women Speak Out"

Fri, April 30, 2010 | Texas Union, Chicano Culture Room (4.206)

2:00 PM

A Lecture and Discussion by Fawzia Afzal-Khan, Montclair State University

Dr. Afzal-Khan will read excerpts from her introduction to the book which places the roles of Muslim women from different regions of the Muslim world to point out an itinerary very different from that most people in the West have come to believe of Muslim women's lives. She will discuss the activist roles performed by Muslim women writers/performers/poets and scholars in the US post 9/11, to help people gain a more complex understanding of the nexus of politics, culture, economics and religiously-imposed patriarchy on women of Muslim backgrounds who have resisted and fought back against such narrow proscriptions everywhere. She will read the words of some of these iconoclastic women, and perform her own poetry as well.

Fawzia Afzal-Khan is University Distinguished Scholar and Professor of English at Montclair State University, where she is Director of the Women and Gender Studies Program. She has published four scholarly books in the areas of Postcolonial Studies, Pakistani Performance Studies, 20th Century Indo-English Fiction, and Muslim Women's Writing. Her latest book is a memoir, Lahore With Love: Growing Up With Girlfriends Pakistani-Style, which will be published in Spring 2010 by Syracuse University Press. She is a frequent contributor of political analyses of Pakistani society to Counterpunch, is featured often on public talk radio (WBAI and Radio Pacifica), and is a trained vocalist in the Indo_Pakistani classical tradition. She is Contributing Editor to TDR (The Drama Review), and serves on the Editorial and Advisory Boards of a number of journals.
