A program of United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program will offer intensive summer language institutes overseas in thirteen critical need foreign languages for summer 2012. The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government interagency effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering "critical need" foreign languages. The CLS Program provides fully-funded fellowships to US undergraduate and graduate students to participate in beginning, intermediate, and advanced level summer language programs overseas. Recipients of this scholarship are expected to continue their language study beyond the program period and later apply their language skills in their professional careers.

Languages offered are:

  • Arabic, Persian: Advanced beginning, intermediate or advanced level;
  • Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish, Urdu: Beginning, intermediate or advanced level;
  • Chinese, Japanese, Russian: Intermediate or advanced level.

CLS Program officer Andrea Turpin (an alumna of UT's Middle Eastern Studies program) will be visiting UT to conduct two information sessions about the program, applying, and the experience of studying abroad with CLS.  Both information sessions are open to students studying or interested in studying any offered language.  Attending an information session is not a requirement for application.

You can find out more information about the program at the CLS website: The application deadline is November 15, 2011.
