Peace with All Religions (Sulh-i Kull): Indo Persian Political Theology and Cosmopolitanism

This workshop will build upon the spring 2019 seminar series on the same theme. Its focus is on the Mughal imperial policy of “peace with all” religions (Sulh-i Kull), inaugurated by the emperor Akbar (r. 1556-1605). This radically accommodative stance toward religion stood in contrast to the policies of their Muslim contemporaries, the Sunni Ottomans and the Shi‘i Safavids, as well as to the policies of Western Christian empires. Scholars from a range of disciplines and area specializations will present studies of imperial engagement of religion in comparison and connection with the Mughal case. The workshop format will consist of panel discussion of pre-circulated papers. PROGRAM

Registration is required by November 22, 2019.

Lunch and light refreshments will be provided.
