Funding for the 2022-2023 FLAS Academic Year Fellowships is dependent upon the Center for Middle Eastern Studies being awarded funding from the Federal Government for the 2022-2026 grant cycle. Please note that we may not find out whether we will receive FLAS funding until after the application deadline, but we encourage students to apply and will notify applicants as soon as we know.
Applications open November 1, 2021 and close at midnight February 1, 2022. It is the responsibility of each applicant to ensure that all of your materials, including letters of recommendation, are submitted by February 1, 2022 at midnight. The deadline is final, and there are no exceptions. All files should be in PDF format.

Files Needed for your Application 

Two-page personal statement or proposal
Current CV or résumé
Two letters of recommendation, one of which should be from a language instructor, to be submitted by the recommenders themselves
If you plan to study overseas, you must also submit a FLAS Travel Request


Personal Statement/Proposal

Be sure to address how and why language study will aid in your academic and career trajectory, including research goals. The more specific you can be in your goals, and how the study of a Middle Eastern language and/or Middle Eastern Studies will help you achieve those goals, the better. Please ensure that your personal statement includes your name, EID, the language and FLAS award for which you are applying. The file should be in PDF format and should be no more than two pages in length (single or double-spaced).


Curriculum Vitae/Résumé

Please ensure that your CV or résumé includes your name, EID, and completed and/or in-progress degrees. The document should indicate your prior language study and be in PDF format.


Letters of Recommendation

Applicants are responsible for ensuring their references has ample time to submit their recommendations prior to the February 1, midnight deadline. Recommenders are to submit their letters following this link.
