FLAS: Eligible Students

This program provides fellowship allocations to institutions of higher education to assist graduate students in foreign language and area or international studies. Fellowships may be awarded for either the academic year or summer. The goals of the fellowship program are: to assist in the development of knowledge, resources, and trained personnel for modern foreign language and area or international studies; to foster foreign language acquisition and fluency; and to develop a domestic pool of international experts to meet national needs.

Student Eligibility ***

a graduate or undergraduate student;
a citizen, national, or permanent resident of the U.S.;
is (or anticipates to be) accepted to the University;
shows potential for high academic achievement based on grade point average, class ranking, and similar measures determined by UT Austin and CMES.
*** To be considered for a fellowship, an undergraduate student must be at the intermediate or advanced study of a less commonly taught language. Graduate students can only study at the beginning level of a less commonly taught language if they have achieved advanced proficiency in another language of the world area of specialization, and if learning a second language of that world area is required for the student’s overall training and expertise.
