Language Examinations


Students must pass the research language examination before starting the comprehensive examination. The examination consists of several pages of text that the student must translate into English. The text commonly is selected from a book chapter or journal article. The use of a dictionary is permitted.

 

Research Language by Area

Hebrew Bible/Ancient Near East
Normally German. In HB/ANE, the exam is taken as soon as possible and not later than the beginning of the third year
Middle Eastern History
French or German. A second Middle Eastern language may be substituted with Advisor approval.
Islamic Studies 
French or German
Linguistics
French or German
