Career Counseling & Professional Development

The Graduate Advisor and GSC members are the best resource for information on academic careers, and may occasionally have useful information regarding non-academic careers as well (don’t expect too much in that area, though—most faculty have little or no experience in careers beyond academics).

In addition to speaking with the Graduate Advisor and individual faculty, you may want to seek career counseling using the services provided by UT. The Liberal Arts Career Services has teamed up with the Graduate School to provide career-related support for graduate students considering or pursuing employment opportunities outside of academia. Their career coaches and workshops are available to all currently enrolled, UT Austin degree-seeking graduate students, regardless of discipline. We encourage you to begin using their services and resources as soon as possible- ideally well before graduation so they can help you maximize your post-grad school employment options.  Contrary to what the term "alt-ac" suggests, preparing for careers outside of the academy doesn't require you to step off the academic track. You can simultaneously pursue faculty and alt-ac career paths.

DMES and CMES will occasionally organize meetings with alumni who can advise you on career issues—look for such events, as well as for career fairs and recruitment visits that take place on the UT campus.

Professional Development and Outreach Opportunities

CMES has, as part of its mission as defined by the Title VI grant, a dedicated outreach coordinator position, held by Katie Aslan. Outreach is also closely related to our funding opportunities and our contacts within the community in Austin and beyond. The outreach program often needs volunteers. If you are interested in doing outreach to the K-12 schools or to the broader community, please contact Katie.
