CMES Re-Authorized by the US Department of Education

Wed, August 25, 2010

The Center for Middle Eastern Studies has once again been designated a National Resource Center (NRC) by the U.S. Deparmtent of Education for a new four year cycle (2010-2014).  CMES has received NRC funding under the Title VI National Strategic Area Studies Act since the early 1960s.  The NRC grant continues to be an important distinction for the Center, one of 19 Middle East NRC awards granted to U.S. universities this cycle.

In announcing the award, CMES Director Kamran Aghaie said that, "This is particularly good news in the current financial crisis, which has put financial strain on all of our programs. This grant will be helpful as we carry on our work for another four years."

Along with the NRC grant, the Center also received renewed Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship funding.  FLAS fellowships are granted to graduate students to study critical languages at the advanced level. All of the languages taught at MES are designated "critical" by the US government.

Overall funding for both grants increased approximately 10% over the previous grant cycle.  We are also happy to hear that our colleagues at the Center for European Studies and the South Asia Institute also received Title VI funding and look forward to working with them on proposed joint projects over the next four years.
