Kristen Brustad Steps up as New DMES Chair

Wed, August 25, 2010

Kristen Brustad, Associate Professor of Arabic, will officially assume the chairwomanship of the Department of Middle Eastern Studies on September 1, but visitors to DMES will notice that preparations for the change in leadership are already under way. Brustad and outgoing chair Esther Raizen have been working closely together for the past year to ensure a seamless transition and continuity in DMES policy and programming.  We are happy to officially welcome Dr. Brustad as the new chair!

Our outgoing chair, Esther Raizen, Associate Professor of Hebrew, was tapped by Dean of Liberal Arts Randy Diehl to be the new Associate Dean of Research in the summer of 2009. This new position will oversee certain special projects, work closely with the Title VI-funded centers at UT (such as the Center for Middle Eastern Studies), and also deal with issues of gender equity in faculty hiring.

Over the past year, she has been working part time at MES and part time at COLA.  With the conclusion of this transitional year, Dr. Raizen will move over to COLA on a more permanent basis -- but not completely.  Dr. Raizen will continue to be an active member of the Hebrew faculty.  We will miss her as chair, but wish her best in her new position at Liberal Arts!
