John Huehnergard Presented with Festschrift in His Honor

MES Professor John Huehnergard was presented with a Festschrift in his honor, "Language and Nature: Papers Presented to John Huehnergard on the Occasion of His 60th Birthday."  Huehnergard has been the leading linguist in Semitic Studies for over twenty years, first at Harvard and now at UT, Austin. His work has been immensely influential in comparative historical Semitic linguistics, but also in more specific fields, such as Akkadian, Ugaritic, Aramaic and Hebrew. This book celebrates his work and teaching and includes thirty contributions — twenty-nine papers and one artistic contribution — by John's colleagues, former students, and friends, on a variety of topics that represent John's versatility and many interests, including philology, history, natural history, and art. The book was edited by Rebecca Hasselbach and Na'ama Pat-El.

From the introduction: "[John's] teaching does not end with supplying us with knowledge and understanding our limits; one of the major things he exemplifies is respect, toward both peers and adversaries. He takes everyone seriously, no matter how wrong he thinks the person’s ideas might be. He does not speak ill of those with whom he disagrees, and he teaches his students to learn from everything and everyone. His criticism of others is always professional, deferential, and gracious, and he asks his students to behave similarly, in person as well as publicly."
