Estefanía Valenzuela Mochón

Estefanía Valenzuela Mochón, a Ph.D. candidate in Arabic linguistics, has been named a Mellon Fellow for 2018-2019. Before pursuing her doctoral degree at UT, she specialized in legal translation and interpreting from Arabic to Spanish. She obtained her bachelor’s degree at the University of Granada, Spain. She is currently using the fellowship to conduct fieldwork for her dissertation in North Africa and Europe. Her research explores the impact that the early trade networks in the Western Mediterranean world had on the transmission of Arabic through North Africa and al-Andalus. 

Estefanía’s research interests include motion verb grammaticalization in Arabic dialects, language contact between Romance varieties andAndalusi Arabic, the evolution of object markers in Arabic, and teaching Arabic as a foreign language.
