CMES Celebrates 54 Years of National Resource Center Status

CMES awarded Title VI funding

We are very happy to announce that the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) has, once again, received funding from the US Department of Education (USED) through the National Resource Center (NRC) program under Title VI of the Higher Education Act. CMES has been continuously funded by Title VI since its establishment in 1960. The grant award covers the period 2014-2018.

The NRC grant provides support for many of CMES’s activities, including the language and non-language programs, faculty development, public outreach, and support for the Middle East Library Program. In the 2014-2018 grant cycle, new and notable initiatives will include collaborations with two minority serving institutions (MSIs): Huston Tillotson University in Austin, to collaborate on the development of a Middle Eastern Studies minor; and Texas State University San Marcos’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction on an initiative to internationalize training for education students.

The Title VI program has seen reduced funding over the past two cycles—this year fewer awards were issued and the competition was especially strong for programs specializing in the Middle East region.

We are particularly pleased to have been one of five NRCs awarded to the University of Texas at Austin, along with the renewal of the Center for International Business Education and Research, which is also funded under Title VI.
