Language Ideology and Socialist Realism in Arabic and Turkish
By looking at the work of the Egyptian author Yusuf Idris and the Turkish author Orhan Kemal, Ph.D. candidate, Matthew Chovanec, showed how recent work in sociolinguistics on language pedagogy can help us to understand the stylistics of socialist realism and specifically the relationship between dialogue and narration. During his presentation, Matthew discussed the importance of a comparative approach for studying language ideology and the interesting parallels between Turkish and Arabic forms of language anxiety.
