FLAS Academic Year Requirements

Graduate and Undergraduate Academic Year Requirements

 
The Department of Education has strict enforcement against concurrently holding other fellowships, internships or employment, on or off-campus, during the period of the award. We ask that you clear all such funding with, Lisa Parisi, the CMES FLAS Coordinator.

 

Graduate and Undergraduate Academic Year Requirements

Register for and maintain satisfactory attendance in one approved language course each semester.
Register for one approved MES area studies course each semester. The area studies course you choose does not necessarily need to count towards your degree, but it must be related to the Middle East.◊
All required FLAS courses must be approved by CMES prior to the start of each semester, and taken on a letter-grade basis (not pass/fail or credit/no credit) with a passing grade.* 
Schedule and complete an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) at the beginning and end of the academic year with a designated language evaluator, who will report your proficiency level and progress made.♦
Attend four CMES events during the term of the award
◊ All graduates must take graduate seminars.
* Courses not listed under the MES / MEL /ISL course offerings must be approved by the FLAS Coordinator and the Department of Education. 
♦ Students studying language at the beginner level must pass an OPI at the advanced level of the other language specified in their application.
 

Post Award Period Requirements

  1. Submit an electronic performance report at the end of the award period to the Department of Education by the stated deadline, documenting your accomplishments and plans for future study or employment.
  2. Complete surveys on your academic and professional achievements periodically throughout your time at UT and for eight years post-award period.
