The College of Liberal Arts at UT Austin is an extraordinary community of students, faculty, and staff dedicated to thinking, learning, growing, doing, and changing the world.

Our college's breadth, depth and adaptability make it ideally suited to the needs of a diverse state with a rich history and a growing, dynamic economy. The liberal arts prepare students to understand and learn from that history, to analyze problems from multiple viewpoints, and to draw upon knowledge from a range of cultures past and present. It prepares them to be creative and flexible leaders, citizens and workers, dedicated to making the world a better place for everyone.

The value of the liberal arts extends beyond our majors. Every student who attends the university, regardless of major, will take classes in our college during their undergraduate years as part of their core curriculum. This includes classes in rhetoric and writing, history and government, and the behavioral and social sciences.

This is what distinguishes a liberal arts education at a public research university: the exposure to leading scholarship and teaching in a variety of disciplines in the humanities and the social sciences, and the opportunity to explore ideas across those disciplines in our classrooms, laboratories and communities .

Our students learn by getting involved, and by working side-by-side with faculty and graduate students on research and community service projects in Texas and around the world. They also gain valuable workplace experience as interns in corporations, nonprofits and government service, and as leaders on campus. Year after year, liberal arts students represent the largest contingent of student leaders on the UT Austin campus.

I look forward to working with students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni and friends in advancing the important work of the College of Liberal Arts in the years to come.
